However, in Bit Pilot the shield powerups are obviously worth picking up, since an extra life is always worth having no matter how difficult the gameplay becomes (assuming it drops back down to the old difficulty when you lose the life, which in this case it does). I haven’t found the system changing my behavior in negative ways at all.

Solid little analysis of the adaptive difficulty in Bit Pilot. Great read if you’ve got any interest in seeing how one little mechanic is able to shape the experience of an entire game.
